THURSDAY, DECEMBER 6, 2001

The Mescalero Apache Nation will hold a new election despite protests from tribal members to uphold a previous one.

The tribe's council on Wednesday rejected a petition calling on the results of a November 6 election to remain valid. New elections are set for January 9 to elect major positions, including president.

The old election had been thrown out because a losing candidate challenged it. Mark Chino, son of the late Wendell Chino, had been elected president by voters.
