A federal judge in New York has agreed to remove private landowners from the Mohawk land claim.

The Department of Justice, in a policy shift at the end of the Clinton administration, asked to have the landowners taken off. U.S. District Judge Neal McCurn agreed, to the opposition of the Mohawk plaintiffs, which include the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe of New York and the Akwesasne Mohawk First Nation of Canada.

The claim centers on 15,000 acres of land in upstate New York. Like other land claims in the state, the case has run for decades.
