Racial profiling discussed at forum

THURSDAY, JANUARY 24, 2002 The Montana State University at Billings hosted a forum on racial profiling on Wednesday, an event which included a Bureau of Indian Affairs criminal investigator. Mario Redlegs says he hasn't noticed racial profiling on the job. But he noted that he mostly works with Native Americans on reservations. Billings Police Chief Ron Tussing said his department has a policy against racial profiling. He presented statistics that show minorities are stopped at higher rates than whites but said that doesn't say whether profiling exists. According to the statistics, Native drivers made up 9.73 percent of the 22,000 traffic stops. But Natives are just 3.18 percent of the population. Get the Story:
