FRIDAY, MARCH 22, 2002

The Sisseton-Wahpeton Dakota Nation of South Dakota is asking the U.S. Attorney's office to start a civil rights probe over a racially charged shooting incident involving the tribe's girls basketball team.

The tribe wants a federal investigation because the two teens accused of assaulting the girls are being tried in juvenile not adult court. The November 1 incident highlighted racial tensions among Indians and non-Indians.
