County opposing Jicarilla trust land

A New Mexico county is appealing the Bureau of Indian Affairs' decision to take 55 acres of land into trust for the Jicarilla Apache Nation.

Citing benefits to the tribe and the local community, a local BIA official approved taking the Boyd Ranch into trust. But Rio Arriba County officials say the decision paves the way for the tribe to have the 36,000-acre Lodge property taken into trust.

The county says the Boyd Ranch will form a "bridge" to the larger property. The BIA office acknowledges a connection.

The BIA agreed to take the Lodge property into trust but the decision is on appeal as well.
