Abenaki Tribe defends recognition

The St. Francis Band of the Abenaki Nation of Vermont is defending its fight to gain federal recognition amid criticism from state officials.

Gov. Howard Dean and Attorney General William Griffin have said federal recognition could pose all sorts of problems. Griffin also says the tribe may not have existed until recently because the Census didn't find any Indians in a certain area.
