FRIDAY, APRIL 12, 2002 Native Americans will commit crimes in Indian Country because they know they can get away with them, a chief of police in New Mexico told The New York Times. "Once it becomes common knowledge, and you're a Native American inclined to become involved with something like shoplifting, you'll know to do it in Indian country," Taos Police Chief Neil W. Curran told the paper. Curran made his comments regarding a jurisdiction dispute in the town, which is located within lands originally conveyed to Taos Pueblo A state judge has determined the state has no jursidiction over Indians on such land. The case is on appeal in the New Mexico court system. Get the Story:
