Native housing authority loses suit

FRIDAY, MAY 3, 2002

A jury in Alaska awarded $480,000 on Wednesday to a woman who blamed her son's death on an Alaska Native housing authority.

Denise James won the award in a 1997 trial but it was appealed. She convinced the jury that the Interior Regional Housing Authority designed a faulty house that contributed to the fire death of her 3-year-old.

The authority provides housing services to more than 40 Alaska Native villages.
