A new "reservation" established at the behest of a man claiming to be one of the last of the Mohegans is being viewed by some New York state officials as an attempt to open a casino.

Ronald A. Roberts, who calls himself Chief Golden Eagle, raised at least $1.9 million to purchase an old, bankrupt hotel. He is calling the 250-acre site a reservation for the Western Mohegan Tribe and Nation.

The tribe is not federally recognized. The Stockbridge Munsee Band of Mohicans, a federally recognized tribe in Wisconsin, has officially disavowed Roberts and the group.
