JANUARY 18, 2001

Responding to a widely-criticized Boston Globe report, Mohegan Tribal Chairman Mark Brown on Wednesday denied the tribe's dealings with its one-time partner were unfair and contrary to federal gaming law.

The tribe entered into contracts with Trading Cove Associates over the management of its now successful casino and a hotel agreement that never became effective. The tribe eventually bought out TCA for $430 million in addition to providing a share of profits over the past several years.

Brown also defended how TCA provided money to the tribe which it used to pay the salaries of former chairmen and other operating costs. TCA was eventually repaid from casino profits.
