JANUARY 23, 2001

US Attorney Dan Webber on Friday filed a civil lawsuit seeking to prevent the Absentee Shawnee of Oklahoma from operating electronic games at their gaming facility near Norman.

The games are classified as Class III and the National Indian Gaming Commission says they aren't allowed because the tribe doesn't have a compact with the state. The tribe, however, says they are a game of skill and therefore are legal without a compact.

Shawnee Governor James Lee Edwards says shutting the facility would result in tremendous loss for the tribe.
