The St. Croix County Board on Tuesday voted it is not in favor of a casino proposed by three Ojibwe bands in Wisconsin.

The board chose the language of its vote carefully in hopes of avoiding a lawsuit by the tribes and their Florida developer. The county had been sued by the group in 1995 because officials signed a service agreement but then stated they opposed it.

Such opposition apparently led the Bureau of Indian Affairs to deny the tribes' original proposal. The tribes eventually won the right to have the BIA reconsider their proposeal.

The tribes also dropped their suit against the county if county said they would not oppose it. Now the county says the developer is again threatening to sue.
