Approval for new casino far away

DECEMBER 8, 2000

Although the state of Wisconsin and the Menominee Nation recently signed an agreement on an off-reservation casino in Kenosha, approval for the project is far away, Secretary of State George Lightbourn told the AP.

The first approval would come from the Bureau of Indian Affairs. It took about 3 years for the Bureau to approve an off-reservation casino for the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe of New York.

Then, the state would have to approve the casino. The state signed an agreement in which the tribe would give the state 8 percent of its net win and surrender sovereign immunity.
