State won't renew Oneida compact

JANUARY 8, 2001

Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson of said the state won't renew its gaming compact with the Oneida Tribe when it expires in May 2003 because the tribe failed to pay the $4.85 million it owes by last Friday.

The tribe has been withholding payment, required by the current compact, because they want better accountability of where the money is going. It is generally earmarked for economic development initiatives for tribes and regions near casinos but the tribe says its not being used appropriately.

The loss of the money jeopardizes money for two counties, says the state.
