FEBRUARY 28, 2001

The New Mexico Legislature's Committee on Compacts on Tuesday recommended compacts between the state and the tribe expire in 13 instead of 18 years but otherwise left the proposal intact.

The committee rejected changes proposed by Pojoaque Pueblo and the Mescalero Apache Tribe, two of 13 tribes who don't approve of all the terms of the new compact. The tribes want a slightly different revenu sharing structure and want half of the money owed to the state as a result of 1997 compacts earmarked for Indian education.

A vote on the new compacts, which cap the rate at 8 percent, is expected soon.
