Store to offer Sacajawea coin

FEBRUARY 7, 2001 In an effort to increase actual usage of the coin featuring the likeness of the Indian woman who helped Lewis and Clark on their journey of the West, Safeway will start offering the gold-dollar Sacajawea coin as change at its stores nationwide. While the US Mint says that 700 million out of 1.2 billion produced are in circulation, not many people appear to be using them as currency. Many are collecting them or using them for other purposes, such as pow-wow adornments or jewelry. Get the Story:
