MARCH 13, 2001

Mirroring a nationwide trend, the Ak-Chin Indian Community of Arizona on Monday opened a 164-room resort-style hotel at their casino near Phoenix.

The tribe is the first to open such a facility in the metro Phoenix area. Other tribes, including the Gila River Indian Community and the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation plan to follow suit.

The Ak-Chin hotel is about 35 miles south of Phoenix.
