MARCH 14, 2001

The New Mexico House on Tuesday approved a bill to redirect half of the money tribes owe the state into an economic development fund that would benefit tribes.

The tribes owe an estimated $100 million to the state as required by gaming compacts signed in 1997. As a condition for getting new compacts approved and to have Attorney General Patricia Madrid drop her lawsuit against them, the tribes agreed to make back payments.

The Legislature on Monday approved new compacts. They cap the revenue sharing rate at 8 percent. The 1997 rate was 16 percent, which tribes considered too high and eventually boycotted.
