N.M. compact passes refund bill fails

MARCH 19, 2001 Governor Gary Johnson has approved a new gaming compact with the state's gaming tribes which reduces the revenue sharing rate the tribes thought was too high. The new rate caps the revenue sharing rate at 8 percent; the old one was 16 percent. Casinos pay different rates depending on how much money they make. Two tribes -- Pojoaque Pueblo and the Mescalero Apache Nation -- have opposed the compact and say they won't accept its provisions. The tribes have also agreed to pay an estimated $100 million owed by the old 1997 compacts. But the Legislature turned down a bill which would have directed half of the money into an economic development fund for tribes. Get the Story:
