Oneida Tribe pays overdue $4.85M

MARCH 21, 2001

The Oneida Tribe on Tuesday paid the state of Wisconsin a $4.85 million gaming fee that it had been protesting since last year.

The tribe had withheld payment of the annual fee because leaders wanted to discuss with Governor Scott McCallum where and how the money was being spent. The tribe then placed the payment in an escrow account pending a meeting.

Instead, McCallum said he wouldn't renew the tribe's compact. But yesterday, upon receipt of the payment, he said he would meet with tribal leaders and rescinded the state's non-renewal notice.

McCallum is an opponent of expanded gaming in the state. He said he won't undermine existing casinos but won't approve any new ones, including any off-reservation proposals.
