MARCH 2, 2001

The Mohegan Tribe has doubts about new environmental health and safety regulations proposed by the National Indian Gaming Commission and tribal chief of staff Thomas Acevedo on Thursday said the tribe already meets or exceeds them.

A number of other tribes have also opposed them. The regulations aim to provide a consistent set of environmental rules for all tribal casinos.

The rules were proposed in July 2000. They would add a new section, 25 CFR 580, to gaming regulations. Comments closed on January 19 after an extension was granted.

The NIGC in November 2000 also proposed minimum internal control standards (MICS) for gaming operations, which the Mohegan Tribe also has raised concerns. The NIGC this week extended comment on them to March 30.
