Tribe talks with concerned fishermen

APRIL 11, 2001

The Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut held a meeting with 15 local fisherman who are concerned about the tribe's new venture into the fisheries business.

The tribe wants to install different types of lobster traps on federal waters. They are asking the Army Corps of Engineers for the necessary permits.

Fishermen are concerned the tribe's equipment will deny them access to their usual fishing grounds. One who opposes the effort told the tribe's aquaculture director: "My experience with Indians is that once they get their foot in the door, we all lose."
