Fifteen Oklahoma tribes currently issue car tags. The Cherokee Nation hopes to be the next and if all goes well, to form a compact with the state to clear up potential legal uncertainties. Some 100,000 Cherokee live in 14 northeastern Oklahoma counties. The Cherokee Nation has promised to earmark part of the revenue from tribal tags to local schools in the area. While the Cherokee continue to remain committed to the prospect of issuing car tags to its members, they are still resolving a few legal matters. Although there is current debate in the Oklahoma legislature to lower the price of a yearly car tag, the Cherokee say this will not affect their decision to issue the tags.
