Gaming suit aimed at ousting state's role

MAY 11, 2001

Three Ojibwe tribes on Thursday filed suit against the federal government charging that Wisconsin Governor Scott McCalllum can't veto their proposed off-reservation casino.

The suit said that McCallum shouldn't be allowed such great powers. Instead, the tribes and their Florida backer say the Department of Interior is the sole and final authority.

After years of debate including Congressional testimony into alleged campaign contribution violations and a series of lawsuits, the Bureau of Indian Affairs in February approved a land-into-trust application filed by the tribes. But since it is located off-reservation, McCallum must sign off on the plan as well.

While he says he is not opposed to existing facilities, McCallum says he is opposed to the expansion of gaming in the state.
