Boston Globe mad about recognition decisions

MAY 21, 2001

Massachusetts has only one federally recognized tribe and no casinos but that isn't stopping The Boston Globe from criticizing the Bureau of Indian Affairs for decisions made in the last month of the Clinton administration.

The paper says the BIA's decisions to recognize the Duwamish Tribe of Washington and the Nipmuc Nation of Massachusetts gave them the "potential to make billions on casinos." The paper also says the tribes failed to convince researchers they satisfied the mandatory recognition criteria although the final decision in such cases is up to the Assistant Secretary.

The paper says an inquiry into the BIA is overdue. The paper also says the $8 million National Indian Gaming Commission budget should be increased.
