MAY 25, 2001

The economic successes of the Winnebago Tribe are helping bring back tribal members to the reservation in northeastern Nebraska.

The tribe's economic development corporation, Ho-Chunk Inc., has become a diverse $50 million enterprise with ownership in gas stations, web sites, hotels, and a housing manufacturing business. It was started in 1994 when the tribal leaders realized competition from Iowa's riverboat casinos would draw profits away from their casino.

The corporation has been recognized nationally for its innovative approach to development. Altogether, some 1,000 tribal members are working for the tribe.
