A California district attorney on Wednesday recommended the Oxnard city council vote down a casino proposed by a landless tribe.

Along with a Nevada corporation, the Greenville Rancheria of Maidu Indians in Northern California have proposed a casino and 250-room hotel on a 25-acre site. The tribe says the casino will bring jobs and other benefits to the community.

A report released by city staffers yesterday said the casino would create jobs and provide the city up to $14 million a year in fees. The study said impacts on crime or social problems could not be addressed while the DA and a sheriff say the casino will lead to an increase in crime.
