Editorial: No rush to approve casino

JUNE 1, 2001

In an editorial today, the New London Day says the city of New London shouldn't rush to approve a casino proposed by the Eastern Pequot Tribe unless the government finalizes the tribe's federal recognition.

Without federal recognition, the paper says there are too many open and unanswered questions.

The tribe in April proposed the development at the Adm. Harold E. Shear State Pier. The tribe says a 228,000-square-foot casino would bring jobs to the city but is also offering $7.5 million for the pier and $6.5 million in annual payments.

The tribe is supposed to receive final word on its recognition by December. The state and three towns are challenging the tribe's recognition.
