Narragansett offer does not impress

The new offer by the Narragansett Tribe of Rhode Island and its gaming partner, Boyd Gaming, has apparently failed to impress state lawmakers.

A Providence Journal poll reports that only 4 of 17 House Finance Committee members are in favor of legislation that would put the tribe's casino plan on the November ballot.

On Monday, the tribe told the Committee their casino would give the state $140 million in 2003, the first year of operation, and as much as $179.5 in 2008 with graduated taxes on slot-machine and table-game revenues.

The tribe has to receive voter approval on its plan, due to its land claims settlement act, which grant the state civil and criminal authority. But the Committee must first place the issue on the ballot.
