JUNE 15, 2001

An American Indian organization in Minnesota is one of a coalition of religious and community groups who are criticizing a welfare proposal offered by the state House.

The groups say the House is being too restrictive in allowing extensions to a five-year-limit to recipients of welfare. They support a Senate proposal which allows parents to continue to receive benefits as long as they have complied with program requirements.
