JUNE 21, 2000

The leaders of 18 townships and villages in Wisconsin have tentatively agreed to support a casino proposal by the Lac Courte Oreilles, Red Cliff and Mole Lake Ojibwe bands.

The tribes and the city of Hudson recently settled a long-standing dispute over a casino proposal that was turned down by the Department of the Interior based on local opposition. The city agreed to drop official appearances of objection to their casino proposal.

The tribes have agreed to give the 18 municipalities $25 million over nine years.
