JUNE 22, 2001

The New York Senate voted 39 to 14 on Thursday to approve a tribal-state gaming compact with the Seneca Nation.

Governor Pataki (R) negotiated the 14-year agreement with the tribe to open as many as three casinos in Niagra Falls, Buffalo, and on reservation land. A number of lawmakers were concerned about approving the deal because they had little details on it.

The Assembly will consider the compact when it returns to work on Monday.
