JUNE 5, 2001

A New Mexico lawmaker said gaming tribes are opposed to paying interest on more than $100 million they owe the state.

According to Sen. Carlos Cisneros, D-Questa, Attorney General Patricia Madrid might want as much as 15 percent interest on the payments. The payments were authorized under 1997 compacts requiring the tribes to share 16 percent of their revenues with the state.

Madrid will not confirm the nature or details of the talks between the state and the tribes.
