Action on Eastern Pequot casino fails

JUNE 5, 2001

The New London City Council on Monday failed to take a position on a casino proposed by the Eastern Pequot Tribe, recognized by the state of Connecticut.

Cuncilor Rob Pero wanted the city to oppose the tribe's proposed development at a pier currently owned by the state. His motion failed 3-3.

The tribe has received preliminary recognition and is due to receive a final decision by December. If successful, the tribe must then negotiate a gaming compact with the state. The tribe also says it won't locate a casino in a community that doesn't want it.
