Tribe to up ante

JUNE 7, 2000

Hoping to gain more statewide approval for its casino proposal, the Narragansett Tribe of Rhode Island said they are willing to give the state more of its potential revenues. The tribe has already offered 25 percent of its slot machine revenues but key lawmakers said that amount was not enough to warrant attention away from its other gaming partners, including the Newport Grand Jai Alai, the dogtrack at Lincoln Park, and the state Lottery.

Under state law, the tribe must receive voter approval for its casino. A telephone survey conducted in May indicated that the majority of voters want to see a referendum on the issue on the November ballot. But as of May, a majority of the House Finance Committee said they were unwilling to place the proposal on the ballot in its current form.

No details on the tribe's new offer are available at this time.
