The small Southern Ute Tribe of Colorado now has a better credit rating than Canada or Japan, thanks to a "AAA" rating from international bond agency Fitch Inc.

The tribe has a net worth of more than $1 billion, a wealth amassed thanks to energy production on its 700,000=acre reservation. The tribe's financial plan and government operations led to the top rating, said the company.

The Ute Tribe is the first tribe to receive the "AAA" rating.
