Tribes seek state approval
JULY 14, 2000

Leaders from the Northern Arapaho Tribe and the Eastern Shoshone Tribe are seeking approval from the state of Wyoming to expand gaming on the Wind River Reservation. A previous effort to approve gaming failed when voters defeated a 1994 initiative.

In Wyoming, pari-mutuel wagering, bingo, raffles, calcuttas, and pull tabs are considered legal under state law. Casino style gaming would need to be approved by a state-tribe compact, to be ratified by the legislature.

Under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA) of 1988, tribes must negotiate with states in order to conduct Class III, or casino style, gaming. The tribes will meet with the state on July 24 to begin discussions on a compact.
