Dog track eyed by Wis. Ojibwes closes

FRIDAY, AUGUST 10, 2001

A dog racing track in Wisconsin whose owner and three Ojibwe tribes want to convert to a casino closed on Thursday night, leaving 200 workers without jobs.

The track closed because it is no longer financially viable. Since Indian gaming was brought to the state, only two of the original five tracks remains open.

The track's owner has also paid millions of dollars to try and convert it to an off-reservation casino that would be owned by the Lac Courte Oreilles, Red Cliff, and Sokagoan Ojibwe bands. In February, Governor Scott McCallum vetoed the idea after the Bureau of Indian Affairs agreed to take the land into trust for the tribes.

McCallum's veto prompted a lawsuit by the tribes.
