Pueblo keeps prices low

San Ildefonso Pueblo keeps prices low at its two gasoline stations, causing other non-Indian businesses to drop their prices in response.

The state doesn't have the right to tax business on Pueblo land, but still requires the tribe to collect gas taxes equal to the state's 17 cents-per-gallon excise. But as a licensed wholesaler, the Pueblo says it can still keep its prices lower than the competitors because of the wholesale price of gasoline.

The tax the tribe collects on the gas goes to fund water, sewer and roads.
