In response to opposition from tribes and a state agency, the Minnesota Department of Administration on Sunday temporarily ordered casino audits be made "nonpublic."

The designation was made after tribes said they would probably stop sending the audits to the state if made public. In May, an advisory opinion was issued to release the documents, which are required by the tribe's gaming compacts with the state.

Bill Lawrence, the publisher of Native American Press/Ojibwe News, and other news organizations have sought copies of the documents.

Tribes submit them to the Public Safety Department. The department is opposing the release of the audits.
