MONDAY, AUGUST 6, 2001

Religious leaders in Massachusetts are starting to voice objections to a potential casino sought by the Gay Head Wampanoag Tribe.

The tribe has tried to bring casino gambling to the state for several years since being federally recognized in 1987. The tribe has reportedly teamed up with the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe of Louisiana on a new effort.

The Massachusetts Catholic Conference and the Massachusetts Council of Churches are expected to come out in opposition to the casino.
