The Sault Saint Marie Ojibwe Tribe of Michigan was loaning the Nipmuc Nation $14,000 a month to aid the Massachuetts tribe's bid to gain federal recognition but stopped payments in 1999, according a report published on Sunday.

The Worcester Telegram and Gazette said the loan was arranged by Guy Conrad, a lobbyist for the Nipmuc Nation, and the payments began in 1997. A spokesperson for the Sault Saint Marie said the loan was stopped because it wasn't "a viable project anymore."

The Nipmuc Nation's federal status is on hold pending review by the Bush administration.
