WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 2001

The Chickaloon Tribe of Alaska is asking the Mat-Su Borough for a tax exemption on tribally-owned land in exchange for bringing development projects to the area.

The tribe says its projects will bring money to the area. The tribe is considering roads, a greenhouse and other projects and has already built a clinic, a school and hired peace officers.

The tribe currently pays about $5,000 in taxes. Some of the tribe's land is exempt because it is owned by a corporation chartered under federal law.
