A Republican lawmaker on Thursday asked the New Mexico State Supreme Court to invalidate gaming compacts with 11 Pueblos and tribes.

Rep. George Buffett of Albuquerque said the compacts were approved illegally and without the full consent of the Legislature. He is anti-gaming.

The compacts were recently finalized after Attorney General Patricia Madrid filed a lawsuit against the tribes for not making payments under a 1997 agreement. The tribes agreed to pay $91 million in back fees and signed new compacts lowering the revenue sharing rate to 8 percent.

Two tribes, the Mescalero Apache Nation and Pojoaque Pueblo, are holding out.
