The Montville Town Council recently spent $4,000 on an newspaper ad that praised the Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut for opening its new casino expansion.

Former town council chairman Richard Wilson said the public should have been consulted before the ad ran in The Norwich Bulletin. He told The New London Day the expense was a "totally unacceptable and a flagrant violation" of local rules.

The tribe gives the town $500,000 every year for supporting its federal recognition bid and for being a good neighbor.
