Neb. proposal allows casino gaming

TUESDAY, JANUARY 15, 2002

An alternative to various gaming options being circulated in Nebraska has been offered by a state lawmaker who doesn't support gambling.

State Sen. George Coordsen of Hebron would amend the state's constitution to allow casino gaming in all of Nebraska. State Sen. Sen. DiAnna Schimek of Lincoln wants an amendment for gaming only on reservations.

Two other groups are circulating petitions to allow businesses to have video slot machines. The state's attorney general considers this to allow the same right to tribes.

The Santee Sioux Tribe is considering its own petition for gaming in Indian Country but hasn't started the drive.
