THURSDAY, MARCH 21, 2002

A Republican candidate for governor of Maine has changed his stand on a proposed tribal casino and says he opposes it.

Peter Cianchette's announcement follows another GOP and Green Party candidate who say they are against a casino by the Penobscot Nation and the Passamaquoddy Tribe. But soon after yesterday's statement, other candidates "modified" their positions to say they might support a casino if there is local support.
