Ariz. gaming bill killed

THURSDAY, APRIL 18, 2002

A bill to implement gaming compacts with Arizona's tribes died on Wednesday by a procedural vote.

The Senate Rules Committee voted 4-4 to halt the bill. The move brought strong criticism of Senate President Randall Gnant, who cast the deciding vote even though the measure was determined to be constitutionally sound.

The full Senate might be able to revive the measure because supporters have enough signatures to bring it back.

Incidentally, Gnant sponsored a bill to expand gaming at racetracks. His measure was killed on Tuesday.
