White House backs off secret briefings

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2001

After drawing anger from lawmakers of both political parties, President Bush today has backed off an order he signed restricting briefing sessions to eight members of Congress.

Bush and the White House were instituting the order after apparently classified information was leaked to the press. News media, including The Washington Post, reported that lawmakers were told in a classified briefing of "100 percent" certainty of future terrorist attacks on U.S. soil.

Responding to security issues, Bush told reporters yesterday; "I want Congress to hear loud and clear, it is unacceptable behavior to leak classified information when we have troops at risk."

After meeting with lawmakers today over breakfast, Bush agreed to have key committees be briefed and to allow sharing of information with lawmakers.
