A busy and important week for Alaska Natives began on Monday with the start of the Alaska Federation of Natives Elders and Youth conference.

The conference, in its 17th year, runs until Wednesday. It is expected to attract 1,000 elders and youth to Anchorage.

The youth conference is then followed by the 36th annual AFN convention, which ends on Saturday. About 3,000 are expected.

AFN President Julie Kitka yesterday told the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce of the gains Alaska Native have made, which included bringing the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights to the state for hearings and convincing Gov. Tony Knowles not to appeal the landmark Katie John case to the Supreme Court.

On racism, Kitka said AFN will continue to work with the United Nations. Kitka had been discouraged by Sen. Frank Murkowski (R-Alaska) from working with the international group.

KNBA will be broadcasting live from AFN starting Thursday.
